I was gifted MML2 by my friend Gene for my birthday in like 2002? I was definitely a Nintendo kid, but my brother and I had a Playstation that we mostly played RPGs on. I'd not played MML 1, but Gene knew I liked Megaman 2 on the NES. This might have been the closest to an "open world" game I'd played before that was a thing. The character designs made a big impact on me early on, and I 100% had a crush on Roll.
Gene and I struggled with an early boss and I have a vivid memory of us playing and saying as we got closer and closer to beating it "Maybe if we were angry we could win." And I asked my brother to help motivate us and make us angry. My brother says "Okay,' picks up a holo Pokémon card that we'd just opened from a pack and bit it, leaving two little bite marks on the image. While it made me angry, we didn't beat that boss over that weekend.
The early 2000s gameplay shows. Auto-targeting is nice, but I never figured out a way to easily target who I wanted. I like the movement, but making the camera move how you want is always a bit of a struggle. Things can feel a little empty, but there is a lot of stuff to do and upgrade and find. It's probably best to play MML1 and 2 closely together, to get the nice compact world of MM1 and then opening it up in 2.
Maybe it's that this was one of the first games that I remember being gifted by someone who wasn't a family member, or that first weekend of playing it, or just a love of the design of it, or the frustration that we'll never get MML3, but this game owns. Get him off the Moon.
5/5 - would play all the time
